fluorescence

After staining with certain dyes, cells can be illuminated (stimulated) with light of a defined wavelength, which makes them shine back in a different color.

Explanation for children: If some microorganisms are illuminated with one colour, they shine back in another color. This backlighting is called fluorescence and it is very useful for us because when the microorganisms light up, we can see them much better.
